Neighbors, I Need Your Help

On October 11, I will be lacing up my shoes for the Royal Victoria Marathon. 26.2 miles of pain and agony. But it's for a good cause. I'm running to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help find a cure for cancers. And I need your help. I'm running this year for three of my friends--Carlos, Ellen, and Drew. Carlos and Ellen have both fought cancer and won, but my friend Drew is still going through chemo for his Hodgkins Lymphoma. He's tough though and he'll beat it. I wrote a b… Continue

Touring Urban Blight in Willow Glen

Here's a fun read on Metroactive by Gary Singh, the urban blight exploration junkie, as he explores Willow Glen on foot. Gary begins his tour of abandoned buildings and liquor stores at the old hardware store on Malone. A fun and interesting read about some of the buildings and shops in our little burgh. Continue

Answering A Question About Neighborsville

I just had a new member of WG2.0 ask me if I could clarify the difference between Neighborsville and WG2.0 so he could make sure that he was on the "right" one. The short answer is that in the near term, there is no "right" one. I figured it would be helpful if I shared my reply with everyone... ____ Hi XXXX, Glad you joined us! I've been running WG2.0 for about two years and I love the community that's built up here. But there are certai… Continue

Introducing Neighborsville for Willow Glen Beta

Some of you may remember that back in 2008, we launched a preview of a site called Neighborsville. We got a lot of feedback and made some pretty dramatic changes. Today, I'm proud to announce the relaunch of the all new Neighborsville for Willow Glen. Neighborsville will make it even easier to share and discover the things that are most important to us as neighbors. Today, you can create your profile and add notes to the neighborhood and c… Continue

Willow Glen In Motion TV Show

I just met Kevin Swanson, President of the WGBA and producer of Willow Glen In Motion. It's a fun show they produce bi-weekly about life here in lovely little Willow Glen. Here's an interview Kevin did with Kathy Adkins, former owner of Willow Glen Books. I'd love to get your thoughts on the series and what you think of the show and the interview. Leave your thoughts in the comments and discuss! Continue

Two People Reported Dead in Hostage Situation Near The Plant

The Merc is reporting that two people are dead in a standoff that started around 8:30am today at a new town home development on Monterey Highway just down the street from Oak Hill cemetery and across from the San Jose Animal Care Shelter. Not many details yet, but I'm sure there will be soon. Continue

Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice on Glen Una

There's an adorable little girl selling orange juice on Glen Una between Byerly and Laurie. She picked the oranges and made the juice herself. If you're thirsty and in the neighborhood, stop by for a glass of the freshest orange juice you'll find in Willow Glen today. Continue

Vote For WG2.0 in the Best Of Silicon Valley!

The Merc is compiling their annual list of the Best of Silicon Valley. And it just so happens that there's a category for "Silicon Valley Blog." So if you happen to know of any sites that you love (hint, hint), click on over and cast your vote. There's also a great chance to vote for other local WG businesses in all the categories. Continue

Any Willow Glen Neighbors On Twitter?

There's been a lot of Twitter in the news lately. If you haven't tried Twitter yet, it's a great way to share short bits of information with friends. Oprah's doing it. Ellen's doing it. Ashton's doing it. Even Willow Glen Extra is doing it. I'd love to find more neighbors to follow to keep ta… Continue

Help Me Give Cancer The Beat Down!

In October, I'm running the Royal Victoria Marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and I need your help. Not with the running, I'll cover that part, but with your money. If you've got an itchy trigger finger and want to donate now, click here to throw a punch. I started running with Team in Training a few years back. I've run a half marathon and three full marathons and together with my wife, Mandy, we've raised nearly $10k for ca… Continue

Fresh & Easy Cancels Plans for Northern California Stores

The Silicon Valley Business Journal is reporting that Tesco has put it's plans for all Northern California Fresh & Easy stores "on hold." From the article: "Tesco PLC won’t open any of its Fresh & Easy stores in Northern California 'for the time being' amid lower-than-anticipated U.S. sales, the British retail giant said Tuesday in an annual earnings report." So it looks like the old Albertson's spot a… Continue

Adios Casa Casa

Someone on the elist today noticed darkness at Casa Casa. A few minutes ago, Norma Ruiz, executive director of the Willow Glen Business Association confirmed that they had indeed gone out of business. Casa Casa was a great little shop and we used to frequently stop in for gifts for friends. They'll be missed on Lincoln Avenue. But this is a good reminder what happens when we stop supporting our local businesses. It's a tough time for everyone, but especially small business owners. Next time you… Continue

An Open Letter to Whoever Egged My Car Last Night

Dear Whoever Egged My Car, I wanted to thank you for making my morning awesome today. When I woke up and got my first cup of coffee, I couldn't help but think how amazing it would be if I went outside to find splattered egg all over the drivers side of my car. And sure enough, there it was. What a great way to start the day. I especially liked having to wash my car at 7am today while it was still cold outside. Nothing gets the blood pumping in the morning like scrubbing dried egg off of paint… Continue

Someone Totaled Their Car on Lincoln Avenue This Morning

Walking down Lincoln shortly before 9am this morning, I met a cop who was finishing clearing an accident. Apparently someone had rammed into two of the concrete pylons on the curb at the corner of Lincoln and Brace between the Longs and the La Villa Parking lot. The pylons were sheared off and the car was totalled. Here's a quick video I grabbed with my iPhone on my way back about an hour later. Continue

A Local Blog In Seattle And What It Means For Willow Glen

There's a small band of bloggers across the country who are big into hyperlocal blogging. Hyperlocal blogging is people writing about where they live. The best example of this that many of you probably read is Willow Glen Extra. As a neighborhood, we can cover what's going on around us a lot better than the newspapers can simply because we care, there are many of us, and we have an outlet to publish the news on. Matt McGee, who I've had the pleasure to t… Continue

UPDATED: Please Help Us! We're Missing a Schnauzer (Not Anymore!)

UPDATE: Fritz was found last night by a neighbor on Fairview. Our most awesome neighbor Glen saw them walking last night and called me this morning. I went to the house on Fairview and we've got Fritz back now. Thanks everyone for being vigilant for us. We're keeping my mother-in-law's mini-schnauzer while she recovers from a stroke and tonight when we put him out, he slipped out of the gate. He's a black mini-schnauzer named Fritz. He's about knee high, black/dark grey with light gray tips on… Continue

My Willow Glen Wordle

This is what I've been talking about on WG2.0 lately. As you can see, the Toys for Tots drive was a pretty popular topic for me in December. I made this using Wordle. Wordle takes a feed from the web (like your WG2.0 blog) and turns it into a word… Continue

I Need Some Help

On Christmas eve, my mother in law had a stroke. She is currently in the hospital and we expect she'll be there for rehabilitation for a few more weeks before we can move her to a more permanent home. In the meantime, she has two miniature Schnauzers, Fritz (7 yrs old) and Hugo (11) that we need to find foster care for. They are sweet loving dogs and love to be walked and play outdoors. They're pretty good with kids, although they do get excited the way small dogs do. They are generally housebr… Continue
